Magnolia and the Meaning of Life

Sun May 8, 2005, 3:47 PM
I just watched the movie "Magnolia" for the first time, and well, it was just one of those movies where I sat there and felt like everything made sense.

You see, I am often moved by the fact that our lives are so forever entertwined with one another's that we bump into those we thought we might never see again or want to see again for that matter. It seems like just when things are settling down, life always knows how to throw you a curveball.

I'm not preaching religious beliefs here, but I have to say that I agree with Buddhist Theologians on this issue. Everything exists because of everything else. We exist because of our mothers, and they exists because of theirs (Happy Mommy's day, by the way.) It's quite a humbling thought... in the scheme of things, we exist because everything else exists. If other things didn't we would have no relevance.

I have an artistic interest, as well, in the scheme that is lain before us. You see, on our paths through life, it is inevitable that we all face an ordeal that will change the way the rest of our life plays out. These moments, to me are interesting beyond despcription or comparison.

How do we pinpoint that exact second-- how does it translate when we stop living one way and begin living another? Laced into the intricate weave of our lives are the changes of direction, the about faces that are impossible to describe. I find these moments breath taking, to say the least.

We are all wound up in them, these beautiful tragedies, and although they may make no sense to us then, later it is impossible to separate these realities from that which we call our own... It is impossible to imagine ourselves without the happenening of those events. They really are amazing, and I find myself in awe under the pressure of a structure for life that is so clear, yet sad.

"This happens. This really happens."-- Magnolia.
